What is a Zine?
A zine (short for magazine or fanzine) is a self-published, often handmade publication that typically features original or appropriated content like art, writing, photography, or commentary. Zines have small-circulation, non-commercial works that are often produced and distributed by individuals or small groups. They cover a wide range of topics, such as music, activism, personal experiences, art, subcultures, politics, or niche interests.
Characterized by their DIY (do-it-yourself) ethos zines find distribution at zine fairs, independent bookstores, and online. Zines enjoy a long history in underground and countercultural movements. This includes punk, feminist, and queer communities, which provide a platform for voices that might not be represented in mainstream media.
